Food For Life

Food for Life Global is a non-profit vegetarian food relief organization operated by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Its efforts span the globe, with projects occupying over 60 countries. Worldwide, Food For Life provides more than 1,000,000 free meals every day and have served more than 3,000,000,000 free meals since our work began about 30 years ago. In Australia itself, we serve more than 10,000 free meals every week in most major cities.

Food For Life engages in various sorts of hunger relief, including outreach to the homeless, provision for disadvantaged children throughout India, and provision for victims of natural disasters around the world such as the wars in Bosnia and Chechnya, the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the typhoon Haiyan, and Hurricane Katrina.

SrilaPrabhupada, ISKCON’s founder, is the inspiration behind Food for Life. In 1972 he stated that: “No one within ten miles of an ISKCON centre should go hungry.”Since that time members of ISKCON and volunteers around the world have set up a global network of kitchens, cafes, vans, and mobile services, all providing free food, establishing daily delivery routes in many large cities around the world.

Food for Life is now the world’s largest vegan/vegetarian food relief program. The distribution of multi-course, hot, healthy, tasty and sanctified plant-based meals has been and will continue to be an essential part of ISKCON’s culture of hospitality from which Food for Life was born.

All of our food programs are based on the understanding that certain foods have an inherent ability to heal the body, mind and soul. For this reason we serve only vegetarian food that is prepared with love and is given for free.

This ethical use of food is also better for our environment and global food supplies. Eating in this way reduces global warming, water waste, deforestation, ocean pollution and even the extinction of some species.

“Too much grief and despair in the world is caused by hunger,”says Australian born Paul Turner, international coordinator of Food for Life. “Krishna devotees are dedicated to bring people hope by distributing healthy and sanctified foods.”

Food For Life has been lauded by The New York Times and government relief agencies worldwide for its efforts worldwide.

Food For Life Adelaide is one of the many branches of Food For Life Global, a charity project aimed at providing free, wholesome meals to people all around the globe. Each branch of Food For Life is independently run by its local ISKCON centre and depends solely on donations from its members and the general public in order to sustain and expand the services they provide.

ISKCON (The International Society ForKrsna Consciousness) is a non-for-profit organisation which runs many welfare programs such as Food For Life, Caring For Life, Cow Protection, Zero Waste Initiatives, Sustainable Farming Operations and more.

In Adelaide, twice a week, our Food For Life team cooks around 100 meals, and distributes them in Hurtle Square , free of charge. That is 10,000 free meals a year . We have been doing this for more than 30 years now  and, with the hope of securing more volunteers and finances, would like to see our projects expand.
