Hare Krishna,
It is with tremendous honour that we would like to share some very good
news with you.
The long-awaited project of a Temple extension at ISKCON Adelaide has
finally been granted. Revamped plans with amended changes by the architect and private certifier meeting Australian Building codes and standards have been approved.
One year ago we entered into discussions with the local Council in which our needs were identified. Following a public consultation and a lengthy application process, we have been granted planning permission. The decision is historic, as not only have our needs been fully met, but all of our neighbours’ concerns have also been resolved.
As some of you may know, ISKCON Adelaide first started in 1975 on the upper floor of a small building on Frome Street Adelaide. The Temple has since then moved around many times until 2000,when by the mercy of Sri Sri Radha Syamasundara, this present property at 25 Le Hunte Street was acquired.
Keeping the Temple open daily for routine worship during the early years was a huge struggle but by Lord Krishna’s grace it was made possible. The Temple has been helpful in meeting with the spiritual needs of the congregation. However, the small Temple Room, which was bursting at the seams, has been unable to accommodate the increasing crowds, causing widespread inconvenience.
There have been many challenges during this long and arduous journey but we faced them together. Your ardent love, allegiance and staunch support has been unflinching and phenomenal. Now Lord Krishna has offered
us a Temple Room four times the size of the current one, and together we must rise to the occasion and make sure it is built.
As Srila Prabhupada’s vision continues to unfold we remain called upon to humbly serve and act upon his prophesy. For us now and for future generations this is history in the making – a moment of great legacy of
tremendous achievement.
So let us make this happen and build the ISKCON Adelaide new Temple Room. From dream to reality, that is our motto.
The Bhaktivedanta Ashram has served its community wonderfully for the past 19 years but we all know the Temple needs more space to accommodate our increasing crowds. In fact, expansion of Temple space is long overdue.
It has been difficult to create a solution because we have been faced with other priorities and with circumstances beyond our control. Many people have raised concerns about the limited Temple Room space, particularly during Sunday feasts and major festivals.
– Our cramped Temple Room allows participation of only about 60 – 70 people.
– In a packed Temple Room not everyone cantake darshan properly.
– A packed Temple Room causes congestionto the bookshop, restaurant, toilets & marquee.
– The new building extension will have 5 toilets, including 2 with wheelchair access.
– The corridor width will be increased for improved devotee & wheelchair access.
– Installation of new fire-proofing and an additional exit from the new Temple Room will provide greater levels of safety for all.
– A larger car park and driveway will deal withincreased traffic
The improved facilities will enable us to listen to visiting sadhus comfortably. A large Kirtan Hall will allow everyone to participate. We will be able to hold dramatic and other performances more easily.
From the current maximum of 70 people, we will be able to accommodate 300. We will be able to host Samskaras and wedding events comfortably.
Our current Temple Room is adequate 80% of the time. However when we have major festivals, Sunday feasts and visiting preachers it is far too
small.
To minimise recurrent heating & cooling costs and daily cleaning, the new Temple Room will be divided with a moveable acoustic partition
wall. With the partition wall in place, the new Temple Room will measure 108 sq.m. When the partition wall is withdrawn, the room will increase to 168 sq.m. With the wall in place, a 60 sq.m space will also be created for hatha yoga, meetings, Gopal Play School classes and many other purposes.

“If you have got some money, don’t use it for constructing a big skyscraper building. Better you try to construct a very nice temple for Krishna’s situation. That is proper use.” Lecture on SB 1.2.8
– Bombay, Dec 26, 1972
“The pure devotee does not endeavour for anything which is against the principles of devotional service. For example, constructing a big building
requires great energy, and a devotee does not take to such business if it does not benefit him by advancing his devotional service. He may construct a temple for the Lord, and for that he may take all kinds of anxiety, but he does
not construct a big house for his personal relations.” – Bhagavad Gita As It Is, 12.16 “Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend.”
– Bhagavad Gita As It Is, 18.65
